The Most Successful Thesis Awards of 2019 have been announced

Our faculty member Burak Zincir’s dissertation thesis named “An Alternative Fuel Assessment Model for Ships and Experiments on the Effect of Methanol on Diesel Engines” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Cengiz Deniz has been awarded the Most Successful Dissertation Thesis of 2019 by ITU. Dr. Zincir received award during the graduation ceremony of the graduate students on 8 September 2021.

The Project of ITUBOA within the scope of EU Erasmus+ Vocational Education - Strategic Partnerships Digital Education Preparation 2020 Calls Project was accepted

Safety is of paramount importance for maritime transportation, especially in narrow waterways. The Turkish Straits are one of the narrowest and most critical waterways with respect to the navigation constrains due to the harsh physical environment. The maritime accidents occurred in this sea area pose acute dangers for human and maritime environment. The congested local ship traffics including ferries, passenger ships, fishing vessels, sailing vessels, etc. and crossing passage frequently interfere with navigation of commercial ships. Efficient training for seafarers is required in order to avoid ship accidents.

A sectoral advisory board meeting was held at ITU Maritime Faculty. The education, research, and development activities carried out at ITU Maritime Faculty were reviewed in line with the expectations of the maritime industry. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of ITU Maritime Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Oğuz Salim SÖĞÜT. Prof. Dr. Metin ÇELİK, Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Pelin Bolat, Assoc. Dr. Emre Akyüz and Lecturer İsmail Kandemir attended the meeting.

İTÜ Faculty of Maritime

The history of our faculty dates back to the ‘Merchant Navy Boarding School’ (Leyli Tüccar Kaptan Mektebi), which was established in 5 December 1884 at Heybeliada-Istanbul as a part of the Ottoman-Turkish Naval Academy with the aim of strengthening civilian navigation/seamanship in the country. During the Republican era, it’s named as the ‘High Navigation School’ and continued its activities in the following decades. Finally, in 1992, it is re-established as a ‘Maritime Faculty’ and tied to the Istanbul Technical University.
